ONU advierte sobre poca voluntad para enfrentar cambio climático

(Prensa Latina) El secretario general de la ONU, António Guterres, alertó hoy sobre el escaso liderazgo y la falta de voluntad internacional para enfrentar los problemas derivados del cambio climático.

Así expresó en un video mensaje con motivo de la presentación del informe del Panel Intergubernamental sobre el Cambio Climático (IPCC), cuyos datos resultan una acusación condenatoria de un liderazgo fallido, dijo.

El titular de Naciones Unidas indicó que el documento revela cómo las personas y el planeta están siendo golpeados por el cambio climático y es una especie de atlas del sufrimiento humano.

Ahora el carbón y otros combustibles están asfixiando a la humanidad, los combustibles fósiles son un callejón sin salida para el planeta, la humanidad y las economías de todo el mundo, recalcó.

En ese sentido, pidió a los Gobiernos del Grupo de los 20 que dejen de financiar el carbón en sus propios países.

No puede pretender ser ecológico mientras sus planes y proyectos socavan el objetivo de cero emisiones netas para 2050 e ignoran los importantes recortes de emisiones que deben ocurrir en esta década, enfatizó el diplomático portugués.

Las personas en todo el orbe experimentan ya mucha ira y ansiedad ante todo lo que ocurre con el cambio climático y este es el momento de convertir esa ira en acción, consideró Guterres.

El cambio climático está provocando extinciones masivas y en el peor escenario, en un futuro próximo, hasta un 40 por ciento de las especies terrestres podrían desaparecer, de acuerdo con el nuevo reporte del IPCC.

Con un aumento de temperatura de 1,5 grados centígrados como el actual, el porcentaje de especies terrestres en alto riesgo de extinción es del nueve por ciento, y alcanzaría un 39 por ciento con un calentamiento de cuatro grados centígrados.

Además, se prevé que el calentamiento global de dos grados centígrados y los cambios asociados en las precipitaciones aumenten la superficie mundial quemada por incendios forestales en un 35 por ciento, indica el informe.

«Estamos en una situación de emergencia que se dirige a un desastre», advirtió la directora del Programa de las Naciones Unidas para el Medio Ambiente, Inger Andersen.

Mientras que a juicio de Hoesung Lee, presidente del Grupo Intergubernamental de Expertos sobre el Cambio Climático, el más reciente informe elaborado por 270 investigadores de 67 países es una grave advertencia sobre las consecuencias de no haber tomado medidas. Los expertos también señalaron en el reporte que los países no hacen lo suficiente para protegerse de las catástrofes que se avecinan en tanto el planeta se sigue calentando, lo cual pone en peligro la supervivencia en el planeta.

Climate change is causing mass extinctions and in the worst case scenario, in the near future, up to 40 percent of terrestrial species could disappear, according to the new IPCC report.

With a temperature increase of 1.5 degrees Celsius like the current one, the percentage of terrestrial species at high risk of extinction is nine percent, and it would reach 39 percent with a warming of four degrees Celsius.
