La deforestación y la explotación para fines comerciales de arena y piedrín, son las principales causas de la disminución del caudal del rio Wany en Siuna y los demás ríos de la Costa Caribe de Nicaragua.

El master Jasmil Castillo Martínez, investigador de cuencas hídricas en Siuna, dijo a Sistema de Noticias del Caribe, que el rio está perdiendo su caudal por la explotación de área y la deforestación.

“Entre más arena se saca al ampliar el drenaje natural, toda esa agua se pierde y cada dia va disminuyendo” comentó el investigador.

Para Castillo Martínez desde hace más de 10 años el caudal de los ríos se viene perdiendo cada año y de seguir así vamos aquedarnos sin ríos.

Sobre la deforestación esta tiene un efecto, el Wany es un zanjo donde corre agua, esa agua viene de partes altas y cerros, cuando pasa esa temporada de lluvia los bosques retienen esas aguas, al no haber masa forestal, se escurre más agua al rio y provoca más inundación porque no hay retención.

Una de las recomendaciones que hace el investigador Castillo Martínez, es la conservación de las áreas de recarga de los ríos,  no es que se tiene que reforestar, es dejarlas como áreas de conservación y protección porque esa va a crecer más rápido que cualquier área que se haya reforestado.

Las áreas de recarga no es cualquier área, son las partes más altas, para el caso del Rio Wany y el Uly la parte más alta es la reserva Bosawas y Jinotega, es esencial que se conserve y proteja Bosawas para asegurar la vida de estos ríos.

El efecto sobre el Wany es el mismo que se vive en los demás ríos que hay en la Costa Caribe desde el Escondido, Rio Grande de Matagalpa, Wawa, Coco, Tadazna, Tuma, Yaoya, Bambana entre otros.

Es muy importante que todos tengamos conciencia de que nuestros ríos están muriendo por las acciones que hacemos, debemos frenar la explotación de los ríos con material para construcción y frenar la desforestación.

Deforestation and exploitation for commercial purposes of sand and gravel are the main causes of the decrease in the flow of the Wany River in Siuna and the other rivers of the Caribbean Coast of Nicaragua.

«The more sand is removed by expanding natural drainage, all that water is lost and decreases every day,» said the researcher.

For Castillo Martínez, for more than 10 years, the flow of the rivers has been losing every year and if we continue like this we will be left without that resource.

He commented that on deforestation this has an effect, the Wany is a ditch where water runs, that water comes from highlands and hills, when that rainy season passes, the forests retain those waters, since there is no forest mass, more water runs off to the river and causes more flooding because there is no retention.

One of the recommendations made by the researcher Castillo Martínez is the conservation of the recharge areas of the rivers and it is not that it has to be reforested, it is to leave them as conservation and protection areas because that will grow faster than any area that is have reforested.

The recharge areas are not just any area, they are the highest parts, in the case of the River Wany and the Uly the highest parts are the Bosawas and Jinotega reserve, it is essential that Bosawas be preserved and protected to ensure the life of these rivers .

The effect on the Wany is the same that is experienced in the other rivers that exist on the Caribbean Coast from the Escondido, Río Grande de Matagalpa, Wawa, Coco, Tadazna, Tuma, Yaoya, Bambana among others.

It is very important that we all be aware that our rivers are dying from the actions we take, we must stop the exploitation of rivers with construction material and stop deforestation.
