Liturgies of the Triduum and the Via Crucis, the essential Easter of the Pope

The celebrations of Good Thursday and Friday, the Vigil Mass and Sunday: everything has been redesigned to accompany the faithful in a time of pandemic.

Vatican News

Everything will be more sober and essential. The Office of Liturgical Celebrations of the Supreme Pontiff had to quickly organize the celebrations that Francis is about to preside without the presence of the faithful, in a half-empty Saint Peter’s Basilica. However, never before have so many people looked at the Pope thanks to the media. In fact, the Pope wants to be close to the many people who cannot go to mass and participate in the liturgies of this unique Easter Triduum in times of pandemic and forced isolation. The Crucifix of Saint Marcellus and the icon of the Salus populi Romani that accompanied both the prayer on March 27 and the mass on Palm Sunday will always be present.

On Holy Thursday, as is already known, the Pope will not preside over the Chrism Mass with the priests of Rome: the celebration will take place when the crisis is over. The Mass at Coena Domini, which commemorates the institution of the Eucharist, will be celebrated at 6:00 p.m. on the altar of the Chair without the traditional rite of washing the feet (which can be omitted, in any case) and will not end with the replacement of the Blessed Sacrament at the end of the celebration.

On Good Friday there will be two moments. The first is the Liturgy of the Passion and the Adoration of the Cross, at 6 pm, in St. Peter’s Basilica. The Crucifix of San Marcelo will be covered. There will be a meditation by the Papal House preacher, Father Raniero Cantalamessa, and then the crucifix will be revealed. There will be adoration, but not the kiss of the Cross.

On the afternoon of Good Friday, at 9:00 p.m., the Way of the Cross will be held in St. Peter’s Square, with the stations along the colonnade, around the obelisk and finally along the path that leads to the courtyard of the church. There will be two groups of cross bearers. There will be prisoners from the Due Palazzi prison in Padua (the meditations were written by some of them), and FAS doctors and nurses. Doctors and nurses are at the forefront of serving patients affected by the pandemic.

During the Holy Saturday Vigil, at 9 p.m., there will be no baptisms. The initial ceremony with the fire will take place behind the altar of confession. There will be no candles for those present and the singing of the three invocations of «lumen Christi» will only take place with the sequential lighting of the lights of the Basilica during the procession to the Silla altar. The bells of Saint Peter will ring the moment the Gloria announces the resurrection.

The same sobriety will also characterize the mass on Easter Sunday, which the Pope will celebrate at 11 in the morning on the altar of the Chair. The Gospel will be proclaimed in Greek and Latin. At the end of the mass, Francis will go to the sacristy to take off his clothes, then he will return to the Basilica in front of the altar of Confession, from where he will deliver the Urbi et Orbi message and give the Easter blessing. Everything will take place inside.
