Caribbean authorities work to reestablish a pass through the barge in the Wawa river in Bilwi

The flooding of the Wawa river has dragged garbage from the headwaters of the river and when passing by where the boat that crosses the vehicles on both sides to Bilwi and Las Minas is, it got stuck in the ferry which caused the cables to collapse, confirmed Juan Ramón Meza responsible for the operations in the Wawa, on the part of the regional government of the North Caribbean.

Meza confirmed that after the first incident, the operators irresponsibly decided to pass the vehicles by hand, causing another incident when the head burst again due to the presence of more garbage, which caused the boat with vehicles on board to drag about 150 meters.

Immediately, the authorities in the region, led by coordinator Carlos Alemán Cuningham and the Wawa work team and the Ministry of Transport and Infrastructure, mobilized a boat known as flat, to tow the boat and take it back to its place, said Meza.

This operation will save both the boat and the vehicles that were on board when it was swept away by the currents when it suffered the second collapse of the cables.

«The problem is that this barge is longer than the previous one and that is why the presence of garbage is greater and that puts greater pressure until the cables burst, so it is best to stop operations until the presence of garbage has dropped and the flow of the river has lowered ”, said Meza.

Juan Ramón Meza said that the operation was carried out successfully because the buses and vans that were aboard the barge when it was dragged were lowered, but everything is under control.

Meza also stated that it is not possible to operate in the current conditions of the Wawa River because it is a risk, so they ask the population to be patient and wait before causing situations to regret.

On the Siuna –Rosita road in the junction sector, their flow is increasing without having any major risks so far.

The authorities of the Departmental Committee for Prevention, Mitigation and Attention of Disasters in coordination with the Municipal Committee for Prevention, Mitigation and Attention of Disasters, COMUPRED of the municipality of the Caribbean remain monitoring the phenomenon and ready to serve the population.
