El huracán Félix cambio la historia en la Costa Caribe

Por muchos años la población de la Costa Caribe de nicaragua, mantuvo la teoría que los huracanes no podían pegar en Bilwi por que la bahía era muy seca, por eso mucha gente se confió aquel fatídico 4 de septiembre del 2007, cuando la Fuerza Naval del Ejército de Nicaragua llego a evacuar a los pescadores de los Cayos Miskito y se resistieron.

Los principales medios de comunicación a nivel internacional y nacional daban cuenta que Félix estaría entrando a tierra con su máximo poder, pero la gente seguía confiando que los huracanes nunca habían hecho un desastre en el Caribe Norte.

Nadie podía imaginarse que el poderoso Félix, iba a acabar con mas de 100 personas fallecidas principalmente en los Cayos Miskito donde entro con su furia alcanzando la máxima categoría 5 en la escala safir Simpson, que destruyo todo en los Cayos Miskitos y allí cobro la vida de los pescadores artesanales, que luego sus cuerpos fueron llevados a Bilwi y enterrados en una fosa común, en medio del dolor y llanto de sus familiares.

Este fue el episodio mas impactante que dejo Félix, pero eso no fue todo, la furia arrasó con las casas en Sandy Bay Norte, donde las casas quedaron destruidas Bilwi y la franja hacia Tasba Pri quedo arrasada, los fuertes vientos derribaron árboles y casas donde los pobladores quedaron muchos a la intemperie.

Sumubila, Sahsa, Nazareth, Truslaya, Wawa Boom, Betania, Bilwi y sus comunidades quedaron destruidas mas de 7800 viviendas, miles de bosques primarios y secundarios quedaron destruidos.

Las iglesias en algunos casos sirvieron como refugio para los comunitarios pero la mayoría fue severamente golpeada, quedaron sin techos y muchas familias elevaron sus plegarias al creador para que pronto llegue la tranquilidad a las familias.

Una foto tomada por el colega Fermín López que en esa época era el corresponsal del Nuevo Diario mostró al mundo a las familias miskitas que lloraban detrás de ellas la iglesia morava Santa trinidad estaba sin techo.

Todo era incertidumbre, la destrucción era galopante en Puerto Cabezas y sus comunidades, donde la fuerza de sus habitantes y las ganas de salir adelante y el apoyo del Gobierno, ese año estaba comenzando su gobierno el presidente Daniel ortega y este recorrió la zona devastada en helicóptero.

Me toco recorre desde Siuna hasta Nazareth, en aquella época Bernardino Herrera Lanzas y Mario Ríos Palacios nos desplazamos en la camioneta Land Cruizer para conocer in situ la magnitud de la tragedia.

Todo era desolador, por donde quiera habían casas destruidas en toda la vía desde Rosita hasta Sumubila, y de allí nos fuimos a la finca de mi madre en Nazareth, a mi lado caminaba Mario Ríos y yo que voy de periodista para informar me convertí también en uno de los mas afectados pues la cada de mi madre no estaba y mientras mas caminamos mis ojos no dejaron de llorar, las lagrimas rodaron al ver aquellas imágenes que solo imaginaba lo peor, pero al fondo una esperanza llego a mí, cuando pude ver a mi madre, ella tratando de hacer algo de comida en medio de la destrucción que le dejo Félix.

Tuvimos que vivir una desgracia para entender que con estos fenómenos no se juega, el Gobierno inicio una serie de ejercicio para preparar a la población y evitar muertes, dos huracanes mas nos golpearon, pero no se perdió una sola vida y es que aprendimos la lección, las comunidades ya no esperan cuando llegan la Naval salen evacuados y se protegen.

Hurricane Felix changed history on the Caribbean Coast

For many years the population of the Caribbean Coast of Nicaragua, maintained the theory that hurricanes could not hit Bilwi because the bay was very dry, that is why many people trusted that fateful September 4, 2007, when the Naval Force of the The Nicaraguan Army came to evacuate the fishermen from the Miskito Cays and they resisted.

No one could imagine that the powerful Felix was going to end up with more than 100 people killed mainly in the Miskito Keys where he entered with his fury reaching the highest category 5 on the Safir Simpson scale, which destroyed everything in the Miskito Keys and there he took his life of the artisanal fishermen, whose bodies were later taken to Bilwi and buried in a common grave, amid the pain and tears of their relatives.

This was the most shocking episode that Felix left, but that was not all, the fury swept through the houses in North Sandy Bay, where the Bilwi houses were destroyed and the strip towards Tasba Pri was swept away, the strong winds knocked down trees and houses where the settlers were left many in the open.

Sumubila, Sahsa, Nazareth, Truslaya, Wawa Boom, Betania, Bilwi and their communities more than 7,800 homes were destroyed, thousands of primary and secondary forests were destroyed.

The churches in some cases served as a refuge for the community members but most were severely hit, they were left without roofs and many families raised their prayers to the creator so that peace of mind may soon come to the families.

A photo taken by colleague Fermín López, who at that time was the correspondent for Nuevo Diario, showed the world the Miskito families crying behind them, the Moravian Santa Trinidad church was homeless.

Everything was uncertain, the destruction was galloping in Puerto Cabezas and its communities, where the strength of its inhabitants and the desire to get ahead and the support of the Government, that year President Daniel Ortega was beginning his government and he toured the devastated area in helicopter.

Everything was bleak, everywhere there were destroyed houses along the entire road from Rosita to Sumubila, and from there we went to my mother’s farm in Nazareth, Mario Ríos walked by my side and I, who go as a journalist to report, also became in one of the most affected because my mother’s fall was not there and the more we walked my eyes did not stop crying, the tears rolled down when I saw those images that I only imagined the worst, but deep down a hope came to me, when I could see to my mother, her trying to make some food in the midst of the destruction that Felix left her.

We had to experience misfortune to understand that these phenomena are not played with, the Government began a series of exercises to prepare the population and avoid deaths, two more hurricanes hit us, but not a single life was lost and we learned the lesson , the communities no longer wait when the Navy arrives, they are evacuated and protect themselves.
