Potente terremoto sacude Grecia y Turquía
Un terremoto de magnitud de 6,7 en la escala de Richter sacudió este viernes la isla griega de Samos, en el este de país, y la costa egea de Turquía, según informaron el Instituto Geodinámico del Observatorio Nacional de Atenas y la agencia oficial turca Anadolu.
Las autoridades turcas confirmaron que hay al menos cuatro víctimas mortales y 120 heridos, mientras que medios locales hablan de importantes daños materiales tanto en Grecia como en Turquía, que incluyen el derrumbe de varios edificios.
En Grecia, el seísmo alcanzó una magnitud de 6,6 en la escala Richter y se produjo a las 13:51 hora local (11:51 GMT), según informó el Instituto Geodinámico del Observatorio Nacional de Atenas.
El seísmo se sintió en Turquía con una magnitud de 6,8, según la agencia oficial Anadolu, que aseguró que afectó a la costa egea, causando graves daños materiales.
En el caso de Grecia, varios testimonios de isleños en la televisión pública helena, ERT, mencionan importantes daños materiales en la zona.
El epicentro del movimiento telúrico se encuentra en el Mar Egeo, a unos 17 kilómetros del distrito de Seferihisar, en la ciudad turca Esmirna.
El temblor se ha notado en gran parte de las provincias del oeste de Turquía y en las cercanas islas griegas.
Voceros de la gobernación de la provincia turca de Esmirna han declarado en un comunicado que al menos diez edificios se han derrumbado en el barrio de Bayrakli, según informó la emisora NTV.
“Hay edificios que se han derrumbado, pero por ahora no podemos hablar de heridos o muertos. Lo estamos investigando”, señaló a EFE por teléfono Büsra Gökçe, funcionaria del ayuntamiento de Esmirna, antes de la confirmación de los primeros fallecidos.
Por su parte, la emisora CNNTürk informó sobre cinco fuertes réplicas del terremoto.
“Estaba en un restaurante. Estamos terriblemente conmocionados. Salimos corriendo, un edificio se ha derrumbado ante mis ojos”, señaló a EFE por teléfono el empresario Özgür Aktepe, residente en Esmirna.
El terremoto duró más de 30 segundos en la zona griega y se ha sentido en todo el país, incluida la capital, Atenas, que se encuentra a más de 300 kilómetros de Samos, según declaró a ERT el vicealcalde de esa localidad, Mijalis Mitsiós.
Protección Civil griega ha enviado un aviso de posible tsunami a través del servicio de urgencias 112 y el gobierno regional del Egeo del Norte pidió a los vecinos que eviten circular en las carreteras paralelas al mar.
El terremoto tuvo una profundidad focal de 10 kilómetros.
Según el catedrático de Geodinámica de la Universidad de Atenas Efthymios Lekas, aunque aún es muy temprano para saberlo con certeza, es probable que se trate del terremoto principal y más adelante sólo haya replicas.
