Bilwi will have a new pier and tourist complex

The Sandinista government will build a pier and tourist complex in the city of Bilwi in the North Caribbean, Virgilio Silva, President of the National Port Company, reported this Thursday.

The official said that work has been done on the future dock to be built in Puerto Cabezas. He explained that the master plan is already advanced and that the construction will be carried out in three stages starting with the pier, which will be made of pure concrete.

Engineer Silva said that at first the damage to the pier was not substantial with the passage of Hurricane Eta and weapons were started in what were the sections, but that they realized that a week, eight or ten days, that it was approaching another phenomenon they never thought would destroy more than 80 percent of that structure.

“And that was practically a disaster, there most of the inhabitants were left without houses, that last hurricane was devastating and we were surprised that all the sections of the dock, the majority that took it to the neighborhoods, the wood was submerged and There they could not be used practically at that time or for the fishermen’s boats, which number almost 200, ”said Silva.

In this sense, engineer Silva explained that he received guidance from President Daniel Ortega and Vice President Rosario Murillo to set up the most important sections of the dock where the ship María, which guarantees the bunker, diesel and gasoline, could dock.

Silva explained that thanks to teamwork, progress was made in the different activities and on Wednesday the repair of the two sections was completed and it is expected that today the ship María will dock.

He recalled that when the dock was built in 1926 94 years ago, it was 1,700 meters long and is currently 570 meters long.

He reiterated that the cost of repairing the pier is enormous, as is the maintenance. Regarding this last aspect, he said that each year between 15 and 18 million córdobas are invested.

«The most important thing is that we are alive and there was no physical damage to the population, that can be rebuilt but life is impossible to replace,» said engineer Virgilio Silva.
