US$24.3 millones adicionales del BCIE para reducir deforestación y fortalecer resilencia en reserva de Bosawás y Río San Juan de Costa Caribe nicaragüense
El Banco Centroamericano de Integración Económica (BCIE), aprobó hoy una ampliación por US$24.3 millones para el financiamiento del «Proyecto Bio-CLIMA: Acción Climática Integrada para Reducir la Deforestación y Fortalecer la Resiliencia en las Reservas de la Biosfera Bosawás y Río San Juan» en la Costa Caribe de Nicaragua.
Este proyecto está compuesto por el financiamiento del BCIE de US$44.3 millones y US$37.9 millones del Fondo Verde para el Clima (FVC), así como US$26.1 millones de donaciones del FVC y una donación adicional del Fondo Mundial para el Medio Ambiente (GEF) por US$8.3 millones, para un monto total del Proyecto de US$116.6 millones.
El presidente ejecutivo del BCIE, Dr. Dante Mossi, expresó que: «nos complace la ampliación de este financiamiento ya que Bio-CLIMA beneficiará a 665,821 habitantes de la Costa Caribe nicaragüense de manera directa e indirecta mitigando los efectos negativos del cambio climático y los daños causados en noviembre de 2020 por las tormentas Eta e Iota que tanto afectaron la zona».
Mediante el Proyecto, se atenderán 8,417 unidades productivas en las cuales se establecerán modelos de producción sostenible, de gestión y reforestación de bosques en un área que abarcará un estimado de 603,035 hectáreas. También permitirá al país aumentar su capacidad de absorción de carbono mediante el fomento de la producción agroecológica de cultivos permanentes bajo sombra; la reducción del pastoreo extensivo y la introducción de sistemas silvopastoriles y de agroforestería de cacao, entre otras acciones.
Las instituciones responsables ante el BCIE para el cumplimiento de los objetivos y alcances de los resultados del Proyecto, así como del uso racional de los recursos asignados y el respeto de las políticas del Banco son, el Ministerio del Ambiente y los Recursos Naturales (MARENA) y el Ministerio de Hacienda y Crédito Público (MHCP).
Las condiciones de este financiamiento como resultado de la mezcla (blending) de recursos del préstamo del BCIE y del FVC, resultan en una tasa de interés fija anual del 0.81% y un plazo de hasta 40 años incluyendo 10 años de período de gracia.
An additional US $ 24.3 million from CABEI to reduce deforestation and strengthen resilience in the Bosawás reserve and Río San Juan on the Nicaraguan Caribbean Coast
The Central American Bank for Economic Integration (CABEI) today approved an expansion for US $ 24.3 million to finance the «Bio-CLIMA Project: Integrated Climate Action to Reduce Deforestation and Strengthen Resilience in the Bosawás and Río San Juan Biosphere Reserves »On the Caribbean Coast of Nicaragua.
This project is made up of CABEI financing of US $ 44.3 million and US $ 37.9 million from the Green Climate Fund (GCF), as well as US $ 26.1 million from GCF grants and an additional grant from the Global Environment Facility (GEF) for US $ 8.3 million, for a total Project amount of US $ 116.6 million.
CABEI Executive President, Dr. Dante Mossi, stated that: «we are pleased with the expansion of this financing since Bio-CLIMA will benefit 665,821 inhabitants of the Nicaraguan Caribbean Coast directly and indirectly, mitigating the negative effects of climate change and damage caused in November 2020 by storms Eta and Iota, which affected the area so much.
Through the Project, 8,417 productive units will be served in which models of sustainable production, management and reforestation of forests will be established in an area that will cover an estimated 603,035 hectares. It will also allow the country to increase its carbon absorption capacity by promoting the agroecological production of permanent crops under shade; the reduction of extensive grazing and the introduction of silvopastoral systems and cocoa agroforestry, among other actions.
The institutions responsible to CABEI for the fulfillment of the objectives and scope of the results of the Project, as well as the rational use of the assigned resources and respect for the Bank’s policies are the Ministry of the Environment and Natural Resources (MARENA) and the Ministry of Finance and Public Credit (MHCP).
The conditions of this financing as a result of the blending of loan resources from CABEI and the FVC, result in a fixed annual interest rate of 0.81% and a term of up to 40 years including a 10-year grace period.
