Inicia temporada ciclónica activa para el Atlántico

Un periodo activo, predicen meteorólogos de la región, para la temporada ciclónica del Atlántico y el Mar Caribe del 2021, que arrancó este martes con la antesala de un evento anticipado: la tormenta subtropical Ana.

Especialistas de la Administración Nacional Oceánica y Atmosférica de Estados Unidos (NOAA, por sus siglas en inglés), pronostican para este ciclo, que se extiende hasta el 30 de noviembre, entre 13 y 20 tormentas nombradas, alrededor de 10 huracanes y de esos cinco de gran intensidad.

La anterior temporada sobrepasó los pronósticos y una sucesión de eventos dejó atrás las predicciones, pues la lista predeterminada de la Organización Meteorología Mundial (OMM) para esta zona geográfica concluyó y dio paso a designar los sistemas con letras del alfabeto griego, hecho solo ocurrido con anterioridad en 2005.

Tales acontecimientos condujeron a que el Centro Nacional de Huracanes comenzara a emitir sus proyecciones a partir del 15 de mayo, a pesar de que la OMM desestimó la posibilidad de modificar este año el comienzo oficial de la temporada.

De esta manera en la lista de 21 eventos corresponde denominarse el próximo Bill, al que le seguirá Claudette, Danny, Elsa, Fred, Grace, Henri, Ida, Julián, Kate, Larry, Mindy, Nicholas, Odette, Peter, Rose, Sam, Teresa, Víctor y Wanda.

En el periodo anterior, Arthur y Bertha fueron los eventos pretemporada, el 16 y 27 de mayo respectivamente, tan temprano como los primeros días de junio llegó el tercer evento con nombre, y justo después a mitad de ciclo circularon entonces otros seis fenómenos para llegar a nueve.

Es la primera vez que se forman nueve ciclones antes del 1 de agosto: Arthur y Berta, Cristobal, Dolly, Edouard, Fay, Gonzalo, Hanna e Isaías, reportaban las estadísticas.

Por segunda vez en la historia además el Atlántico llegó a acoger cinco o más ciclones tropicales simultáneamente: Paulette, René, Sally, Teddy y Vicky.

Septiembre fue el mes más activo, con 10 tormentas y al comenzar octubre ya la lista predeterminada de la OMM había concluido, para dar paso a otros que llegaron hasta Eta, uno de los huracanes más devastadores del 2020.

Fueron contabilizados entonces un total de 31 ciclones tropicales o subtropicales, 30 tormentas con nombre, 13 huracanes, seis de ellos mayores.

Active hurricane season begins for the Atlantic

An active period, forecasters of the region predict, for the 2021 Atlantic and Caribbean Sea cyclonic season, which began this Tuesday with the prelude to an anticipated event: the subtropical storm Ana.

Specialists of the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration of the United States (NOAA, for its acronym in English), forecast for this cycle, which lasts until November 30, between 13 and 20 named storms, about 10 hurricanes and of those five of great intensity.

The previous season surpassed the forecasts and a succession of events left the predictions behind, as the predetermined list of the World Meteorology Organization (WMO) for this geographical area concluded and gave way to designate the systems with letters of the Greek alphabet, a fact that only occurred with earlier in 2005.

Such events led the National Hurricane Center to begin issuing its projections from May 15, despite the WMO dismissing the possibility of modifying the official start of the season this year.

In this way, in the list of 21 events, it corresponds to be called the next Bill, which will be followed by Claudette, Danny, Elsa, Fred, Grace, Henri, Ida, Julián, Kate, Larry, Mindy, Nicholas, Odette, Peter, Rose, Sam , Teresa, Víctor and Wanda.

In the previous period, Arthur and Bertha were the preseason events, on May 16 and 27 respectively, as early as the first days of June the third named event arrived, and just after mid-cycle then six other phenomena circulated to arrive to nine.

September was the most active month, with 10 storms and by the beginning of October the default WMO list had ended, to make way for others that reached Eta, one of the most devastating hurricanes of 2020.
