OMS alerta por propagación rápida de la variante Ómicron

La Organización Mundial de la Salud alertó este domingo que la variante Ómicron del virus causante de la Covid-19 se propaga más rápido que la Delta, aunque genera síntomas más leves, también lastran la acción de las vacunas.

La OMS llegó a tales conclusiones con datos que se califican como preliminares, ésto tras la detección del Ómicron en 63 países al 9 de diciembre, en una actualización técnica que confirma las declaraciones de sus funcionarios en los últimos días.

Este avance más rápido de la variante Ómicron no es exclusivo a Sudáfrica, donde Delta es menos prevalente, sino también en Reino Unido, donde esta forma es la dominante.

De momento, la falta de mayor información impide afirmar si la tasa de transmisión de Ómicron se debe a que logra sortear la inmunidad, a que sus características la hacen más contagiosa o una combinación de ambos factores.

No obstante, la OMS proyectó que “Ómicron supere a Delta en los lugares donde hay transmisión comunitaria”.

Desde Sudáfrica, reportan que los datos muestran que la nueva ola está provocando enfermedades y muertes menos graves que las olas anteriores, aunque los funcionarios de salud dicen que es demasiado pronto para estar seguros y que los resultados severos continuarán aumentando.

En relación con las vacunas, un nuevo trabajo del Instituto de Investigaciones sobre Salud de África, con sede en Sudáfrica, sugiere fuertemente que la variante Ómicron escapa a la inmunidad de anticuerpos inducida por la vacuna Pfizer, pero que se retiene una inmunidad considerable en personas que fueron vacunadas y previamente infectadas.

Los países que tienen medios están alentando a la población a recibir una dosis de refuerzo, este es el caso de Europa donde hay una nueva ola de contagios provocada por la irrupción de Delta, el abandono de las medidas de prevención y por las bajas tasas de vacunación en algunos países.

Regarding vaccines, new work from the South African-based Institute for Health Research in Africa strongly suggests that the Omicron variant escapes the antibody immunity induced by the Pfizer vaccine, but that considerable immunity is retained in people. who were vaccinated and previously infected.
