MLR forestal participa en Estrategia Regional de cacao

MLR Forestal, como principal empresa agroforestal del Caribe Norte de Nicaragua, es uno de los actores clave en este proceso de consulta.

MLR Forestal, como parte de la Comisión de Cacao de Nicaragua, Comcacao, asociado al Comité del Cacao de Centroamérica y República Dominicana, Sicacao, participa en la consulta para la construcción de la Estrategia Regional de Cacao para Centroamérica y República Dominicana para el periodo 2021-2030.

La estrategia regional, financiada por la Agencia de Cooperación Suiza para el Desarrollo (COSUDE) a través del proyecto de Gestión del Conocimiento de la Cadena de Valor del Cacao en Centroamérica, será construida a partir de los objetivos comunes de los países y tomará como referencia las leyes, políticas y estrategias nacionales de cada país. El proceso de elaboración va de enero a mayo del año en curso.

MLR Forestal, empresa que promueve inversiones de impacto en el sector agroforestal con resultados ambientales, sociales y económicos claves para el desarrollo de las comunidades donde opera, participa en la construcción de los lineamientos referidos a la equidad e igualdad de género y la participación de las organizaciones y los jóvenes en la cadena de valor, entre otros temas.

En el tema de género se contempla la identificación de barreras para la participación de mujeres en los diferentes eslabones de la producción de cacao. En cuanto a juventudes y cacao, la estrategia contempla grupos focales para conocer sus intereses y demandas en relación al sector cacao, además de mostrar las oportunidades que existen alrededor de la cadena de valor de este producto.

“Como empresa comprometida con el desarrollo de cultivos forestales tecnificados y la sostenibilidad, nos complace participar en la construcción de la Estrategia Regional de Cacao. Esta iniciativa regional coincide con uno de nuestros objetivos, que es impulsar la recuperación del medioambiente para las futuras generaciones, razón por la que estamos más que contentos de ser parte de su construcción e implementación”, dijo Juan Ignacio Ramírez, Gerente comercial de MLR Forestal.

Por el medio ambiente

El medioambiente es otro de los aspectos importantes que retoma la Estrategia Regional de Cacao para determinar los actores clave del sector y su nexo con la diversidad funcional (DF), como, por ejemplo: usos de suelo/tipo de cobertura, componentes de la DF-abundancia de árboles, rango de atributos (leguminosas, forraje, leña, nutrición) y presencia de especies específicas (valor cultural-religioso).

La meta de MLR Forestal es establecer, manejar y aprovechar sosteniblemente 1,500 ha de cacao con una productividad estimada de 1.8 toneladas métricas métricas por hectárea y por año.

MLR Forestal tiene plantadas 1,050 hectáreas de cacao en asocio con la teca. El asocio es un método innovador que MLR Forestal válida en Nicaragua. El cacao requiere de sombra ya que no soporta temperaturas altas; el método consiste en plantar el cacao junto a la teca para que le dé sombra. El cacao producido por MLR Forestal, se utiliza en la elaboración de chocolate en Alemania.

Las inversiones de impacto de MLR Forestal hacen uso de la mejor tecnología agroforestal para impulsar viveros y jardines clonales que producen germoplasmas de alta calidad genética, con buen potencial productivo y tolerancia a plagas y enfermedades propias del cultivo.

MLR Forestal participates in the Regional Cocoa Strategy

MLR Forestal, as the main agroforestry company in the North Caribbean of Nicaragua, is one of the key actors in this consultation process.

MLR Forestal, as part of the Nicaraguan Cocoa Commission, Comcacao, associated with the Central American and Dominican Republic Cocoa Committee, Sicacao, participates in the consultation for the construction of the Regional Cocoa Strategy for Central America and the Dominican Republic for the period 2021 -2030.

The regional strategy, financed by the Swiss Development Cooperation Agency (SDC) through the Knowledge Management project of the Cocoa Value Chain in Central America, will be built from the common objectives of the countries and will take as a reference the national laws, policies and strategies of each country. The production process runs from January to May of the current year.

MLR Forestal, a company that promotes impact investments in the agroforestry sector with key environmental, social and economic results for the development of the communities where it operates, participates in the construction of the guidelines regarding gender equity and equality and the participation of the organizations and youth in the value chain, among other issues.

On the subject of gender, the identification of barriers to the participation of women in the different links of cocoa production is contemplated. Regarding youth and cocoa, the strategy includes focus groups to find out their interests and demands in relation to the cocoa sector, in addition to showing the opportunities that exist around the value chain of this product.

For the environment

The environment is another important aspect that the Regional Cocoa Strategy takes up to determine the key actors in the sector and their link with functional diversity (DF), such as: land use / type of coverage, components of the DF -Abundance of trees, range of attributes (legumes, forage, firewood, nutrition) and presence of specific species (cultural-religious value).

The goal of MLR Forestal is to establish, manage and sustainably use 1,500 ha of cocoa with an estimated productivity of 1.8 metric tons per hectare per year.

MLR Forestal has 1,050 hectares of cocoa planted in association with teak. The association is an innovative method that MLR Forestal is valid in Nicaragua. Cocoa requires shade as it does not withstand high temperatures; the method consists of planting the cocoa next to the teak for shade. The cocoa produced by MLR Forestal is used in the production of chocolate in Germany.

MLR Forestal’s impact investments make use of the best agroforestry technology to promote nurseries and clonal gardens that produce germplasm of high genetic quality, with good productive potential and tolerance to pests and diseases typical of the crop.
