Tormenta tropical Laura deja al menos 21 muertos en Haití
Al menos 21 muertos y cinco desaparecidos dejó la tormenta tropical Laura tras su paso por Haití, según la más reciente evaluación parcial de la Defensa Civil divulgada este martes.
Las autoridades registraron fallecidos en los departamentos Sudeste, Oeste y Sur, entre ellos un bebé de nueve meses, un niño de ocho años, además de 10 mujeres y ocho hombres.
El organismo agregó que dos niños y tres adultos se encuentran desaparecidos en regiones de Oeste y Sudeste, dos de las más golpeadas por el fenómeno meteorológico. También se reportan cuatro heridos.
Cerca de 200 familias fueron afectadas en el departamento Nippes, a unos 150 kilómetros al sudoeste de Puerto Príncipe. Las autoridades señalaron que la zona costera del sur fue inaccesible tras las afectaciones en cuatro puentes que unen a las comunas de Roche-à-Bateau, Coteaux y Chardonnières.
También registraron daños severos en diversos tramos de carretera, mientras aún es intransitable el tramo que une a las comunas norteñas de La Victoire y Pignon, detalló la Defensa Civil.
El balance indicó además que 15 casas fueron destruidas, otras 135 sufrieron daños, y 447 viviendas se inundaron. La víspera el río Artibonite continuaba crecido, mientras las autoridades prosiguen con las evaluaciones parciales y prevén nuevos vuelos de reconocimiento.
El centro de la tormenta tropical Laura tocó tierra en Haití por el departamento Noreste y atravesó regiones de Artibonite y Noroeste. A su pasó provocó fuertes lluvias e inundaciones.
Organismos internacionales como Naciones Unidas estimaron que al menos dos millones de personas precisarán asistencia tras el fenómeno meteorológico que también provocó derrumbes y deslizamientos de tierra.
