Firefighters without diving equipment delay search in Siuna lagoon

A special equipment for diving is needed in the Siuna fire station, which can achieve a successful search in the search operation for the body of citizen Jairo Benavidez Gómez who accidentally fell into the Siuna lagoon and did not come out again.

Mario Pérez of risk management of the Municipal Government of Siuna, said that coordination is being made with the civil defense in Puerto Cabezas to request help, but they do not have the necessary equipment to dive either.

The man fell in the upper part of the lagoon where he fell to the bottom and it is presumed that he was hit, he left several times, but finally the body sank.

The COMUPRED and the Firefighters began the search since yesterday at the time of the accident, they suspended the search last night and today the search and rescue operation of the body of Benavides Gómez continues.

In the operation they are using only a diving mask to carry out the search.

What the relatives have said is that the man was admitted to the Carlos Centeno de Siuna hospital, he left there and then the tragedy occurred in the Siuna lagoon.

If the firefighters and some residents who have joined in to help in the search cannot find the body by diving with mask, then there is no other option but to wait for the body to float.

One of the forensic medicine manuals commonly consulted by specialists points out the difficulty of specifying (in cases where the date of submersion is unknown) how long a body has remained in water. «It is a company many times superior to human forces, the data vary so much with environmental, seasonal, individual circumstances, etc.», explains the author.

But of all of them, the temperature of the water is the main factor due to its ability to accelerate or slow down the bacterial decomposition of the corpse and, with it, the formation of gases -hydrogen, ammonia, methane, carbon dioxide, nitrogen and hydrogen sulfide- responsible for the body moving upward.

There is a table for forensic use, the Devergie table, which collects the successive morphological changes that the corpse experiences over time depending on the time of the event, be it summer or winter.

And that details how a period of 5 to 8 hours in the water in summer is equivalent in winter to another of between 3 and 5 days.

«If the body is not caught in a rock, a cavity or any other element that it has encountered when submerging, the currents and its own weight will soon send it to the bottom, where it will remain until the putrefaction process enters the emphysematous phase and the gases are formed that will return it to the surface «, details an expert, who opposes this circumstance» the normal situation of a person who dies and at 24 or 48 hours already presents the green stain in the area of the appendix, the first manifestation objective and visible of the putrefaction «, indicates

The search operation continues in the Siuna lagoon, while relatives and residents have arrived at the place to wait for them to find the body of the people who fell to the bottom of the lagoon.
