“El Modelo Bonanza ha transformado a Bonanza”

Tiene una apariencia fuerte, pero cuando ríe, todo cambia. Basta una pequeña broma para hacer surgir al hombre chilero, bromista, de respuesta rápida y sobre todo franca. Así es Gary Downs, un costeño orgulloso de su origen, de su familia y de Bonanza, ciudad que considera su país.

Su apellido es como el oro, una veta prodigiosa que ha producido mujeres y hombres de gran valor para el progreso de esta ciudad. La minería la lleva en la sangre, pero también es un mérito propio, ya que cuenta con más de 20 años dedicados al oficio destacándose como una de las personas que más sabe de minería artesanal en Nicaragua.

Hoy, a sus 50 años, el cumiche de los Downs y el cocinero del mejor rondón de la zona, cierra un capítulo largo en su vida y se enrumba a nuevos proyectos personales que tenía detenidos a la espera de un mañana que finalmente ya llegó.

¿Qué es HEMCO para Gary Downs?

Es un referente. Estar en HEMCO es como estar en las grandes ligas. Es una empresa grande, respetada, que aporta a la economía no solo local sino regional. Es una empresa que se ha mantenido estable con la comunidad, el Estado y todos sus grupos de interés. Cuando te identifican como HEMCO te da orgullo porque la reputación de HEMCO es grande y muy bien reconocida.

¿Cómo es despedirse de HEMCO?

Honestamente me siento tranquilo. Esto se debe a proyectos familiares y eso me tiene motivado, me hace sentir cómodo. Además, no es totalmente una despedida porque en HEMCO dejo a personas grandiosas, buenos amigos y un gran equipo y eso también me da nostalgia, pero me siento bien, me siento tranquilo.

¿Qué se lleva de estos 20 años?

Como dijo Gardel “20 años no es nada…”, pero yo sí siento que 20 años pesan. Laboralmente, ha sido la mejor experiencia de mi vida. Ha sido mi universidad, mi aprendizaje de cada día. Estos 20 años no han sido más que aprender todos los días.

¿Cuál fue su mayor reto?

Construir día a día el Modelo Bonanza para la minería artesanal; es, además de lindo, un reto grande. No tenemos un modelo en otros países del cual podamos aprender, así que no podemos compararnos. Esta experiencia de aprender haciendo pasó por momentos tensos, duros, pero fueron necesarios para aprender y desaprender.

¿Qué actitudes personales fueron clave en este tiempo?

Disciplina y constancia, saber que no lo sé todo, hacer las cosas hasta que salgan bien y eso solo funciona cuando te rodeás de personas comprometidas, gente como Antony Sinclair (q.e.p.d.), Juan Lanuza con quien aún comparto, mis hermanos que nunca me han negado su apoyo y mi familia que es mi pilar.

¿Qué aprendió como gerente de Minería Artesanal?

La primera lección es lo que se convirtió en lema: La minería industrial y artesanal pueden y deben trabajar juntas. No hay magia ni ciencia, se trata de encontrar los espacios donde todos pongamos nuestras inquietudes y diferencias y encontrar los puntos en común. Así se marcó el punto de partida de la minería artesanal.

¿Cuál fue el mayor reto del Modelo Bonanza?

Generar confianza en el minero artesanal. Logramos calar fuertemente en la confianza del minero y con inversión marcamos la diferencia. HEMCO apostó a mejorar la tecnología en este sector y a dignificar el trabajo de la minería artesanal. La confianza ha permitido liberar esa presión causada en el pasado.

¿Cómo se ve el aporte del Modelo Bonanza?

En la transformación de Bonanza, somos testigos de eso. En la última década, se ha transformado mucho y tiene que ver con la economía que ha generado en el pueblo el Modelo Bonanza porque su motor es la minería artesanal. Esta minería ha impreso una dinámica económica importante al pueblo y hoy es lindo ver a tantas familias que a través de este Modelo han logrado la estabilidad económica.

¿Qué recomendación daría a su sucesor?

Comunicación oportuna y atención a los problemas a tiempo. En este negocio hay cosas que pueden parecer simples, pero si no se atienden en el momento que surgen puede volverse una situación grave. También es importante una relación constante con los mineros para mantener una buena armonía.

His last name is like gold, a prodigious vein that has produced women and men of great value for the progress of this city. Mining is in his blood, but it is also his own merit, since he has more than 20 years dedicated to the trade, standing out as one of the people who knows the most about artisanal mining in Nicaragua.

It is a referent. Being at HEMCO is like being in the big leagues. It is a large, respected company that contributes to the economy not only local but also regional. It is a company that has remained stable with the community, the State and all its interest groups. When you are identified as HEMCO it gives you pride because HEMCO’s reputation is great and well recognized.

What is it like to say goodbye to HEMCO?

I honestly feel calm. This is due to family projects and that keeps me motivated, it makes me feel comfortable. Also, it is not totally a farewell because at HEMCO I am leaving great people, good friends and a great team and that also makes me nostalgic, but I feel good, I feel calm.

What do you take from these 20 years?

As Gardel said, «20 years is nothing…», but I do feel that 20 years weigh heavily. At work, it has been the best experience of my life. It has been my university, my daily learning. These 20 years have been nothing more than learning every day.

What was your biggest challenge?

Build the Bonanza Model for artisanal mining day by day; It is, in addition to being beautiful, a great challenge. We don’t have a model in other countries that we can learn from, so we can’t compare ourselves. This experience of learning by doing went through tense, hard moments, but they were necessary to learn and unlearn.

What personal attitudes were key at this time?

Discipline and perseverance, knowing that I don’t know everything, doing things until they turn out well, and that only works when you surround yourself with committed people, people like Antony Sinclair (RIP), Juan Lanuza with whom I still share, my brothers who have never met me. denied their support and my family that is my pillar.

What did you learn as an Artisanal Mining manager?

The first lesson is what became the slogan: Industrial and artisanal mining can and should work together. There is no magic or science, it is about finding the spaces where we all put our concerns and differences and find the common ground. Thus the starting point of artisanal mining was marked.

What was the biggest challenge of the Bonanza Model?

Build confidence in the artisanal miner. We managed to gain a strong impact on the trust of the miner and with investment we make a difference. HEMCO bet on improving technology in this sector and dignifying the work of artisanal mining. Trust has allowed us to release that pressure caused in the past.

How is the contribution of the Bonanza Model seen?

In the transformation of Bonanza, we witness that. In the last decade, a lot has changed and it has to do with the economy that the Bonanza Model has generated in the town because its engine is artisanal mining. This mining has given an important economic dynamic to the town and today it is nice to see so many families that through this Model have achieved economic stability.

What recommendation would you give to his successor?

Timely communication and attention to problems in time. In this business there are things that may seem simple, but if they are not attended to when they arise, it can become a serious situation. A constant relationship with the miners is also important to maintain a good harmony.
