Garífunas recuerdan el día en que llegaron a Centroamérica

Hoy 12 de abril es un día grande en nuestra historia caribeña, especialmente para el pueblo garífuna. Es el día que nuestros hermanos y hermanas garífunas o caribes negros llegaron a Centro América, no por su propia voluntad, sino porque fueron expulsados de su propia tierra en San Vicente y las Grandinas por los colonialistas soldados británicos, simplemente porque los garífunas se negaron a entregarles sus tierras y resistieron junto a su líder Joseph Chatoyer a ser esclavos de los británicos.

Después del asesinato del Líder Ancestral Garífuna, Joseph Chatoyer por parte de los colonialistas/esclavistas del imperio británico, desataron la persecución y captura de todos los caribes negros vivos de la isla de San Vicente y los vinieron a tirar a Centro América en la isla de Roatan en la Costa Caribe de Honduras el 12 de abril de 1797. En ese desolado territorio hondureño sobrevivieron con su arduo trabajo y años después algunos se trasladaron a Guatemala y Belice, otros vinieron a Nicaragua, y una parte permaneció en Honduras.

La historia de los garífunas es una majestuosa vida ejemplar de trabajo por la sobrevivencia, lucha frontal contra el colonialismo europeo y por la libertad de su pueblo. En este día se cumplen 227 años de su llegada a Centro América y a pesar que fue contra su voluntad, fundaron comunidades y conservaron en lo posible su cultura. La Revolución Sandinista ha reconocido su rico aporte como pueblo y les brinda el apoyo para fortalecer la preservación y revitalización de su cultura incluyendo un territorio titulado. Hoy desde Bluefields en el Caribe Sur de Nicaragua todos los pueblos humanos les saludamos y cantamos lo que está establecido como principio de la revolución:  La cultura del pueblo garífuna, forma parte de la cultura nacional de Nicaragua y la enriquece.

Garífunas remember the day they arrived in Central America

Today, April 12, is a big day in our Caribbean history, especially for the Garifuna people. It is the day that our Garifuna or Black Carib brothers and sisters arrived in Central America, not of their own free will, but because they were expelled from their own land in Saint Vincent and the Grandinas by the colonialist British soldiers, simply because the Garifunas refused to give them their lands and they resisted, together with their leader Joseph Chatoyer, being slaves to the British.

After the murder of the Garifuna Ancestral Leader, Joseph Chatoyer by the colonialists/slavers of the British Empire, they unleashed the persecution and capture of all the living black Caribs on the island of Saint Vincent and came to throw them in Central America on the island of Roatan on the Caribbean Coast of Honduras on April 12, 1797. In that desolate Honduran territory they survived with their hard work and years later some moved to Guatemala and Belize, others came to Nicaragua, and a part remained in Honduras.

The history of the Garifuna is a majestic exemplary life of work for survival, frontal struggle against European colonialism and for the freedom of their people. This day marks 227 years since their arrival in Central America and even though it was against their will, they founded communities and preserved their culture as much as possible. The Sandinista Revolution has recognized their rich contribution as a people and provides them with support to strengthen the preservation and revitalization of their culture, including a titled territory. Today from Bluefields in the Southern Caribbean of Nicaragua, all human peoples greet you and sing what is established as the principle of the revolution: The culture of the Garifuna people is part of the national culture of Nicaragua and enriches it.
