OMS advierte que variante Ómicron representa un riesgo muy alto
La nueva variante ómicron del coronavirus presenta “un riesgo muy elevado” para el mundo, advirtió este lunes la Organización Mundial de la Salud (OMS) subrayando que hay todavía muchas incógnitas sobre esta variante, especialmente sobre el peligro real que representa.
“Hasta el momento, no se ha registrado ninguna muerte asociada a la variante ómicron”; dijo la OMS en un documento técnico publicado este lunes, en el que también da consejos a las autoridades para intentar frenar su avance.
“Dadas las mutaciones que podrían conferirle la capacidad de escapar a una respuesta inmunitaria; y darle una ventaja en términos de transmisibilidad, la probabilidad de que ómicron se extienda a nivel mundial es elevada”; indica la organización.
Así mismo se amplía la lista de países, donde la variante ha sido detectada tras los primeros casos producidos en África austral este mes de noviembre.
“En función de estas características podría haber futuros picos de covid-19, que podrían tener consecuencias severas (…)” agrega la OMS, que ya desde el viernes calificó la variante de «preocupante».
Del mismo modo, las incógnitas sobre esta variante siguen siendo numerosas, advierte sin embargo la organización: su contagiosidad; y si ésta es inherente a las mutaciones constatadas o al hecho de que la variante elude la respuesta inmunitaria. El nivel de protección de las vacunas anticovid existentes, y la gravedad de la enfermedad, es decir si la variante causa síntomas más graves.

The new omicron variant of the coronavirus presents «a very high risk» for the world, the World Health Organization (WHO) warned this Monday, stressing that there are still many unknowns about this variant, especially about the real danger it represents.
«So far, no deaths associated with the omicron variant have been registered»; The WHO said in a technical document published on Monday, in which it also gives advice to the authorities to try to stop its progress.
“Given the mutations that could give it the ability to escape an immune response; and give it an advantage in terms of transmissibility, the probability that omicron will spread worldwide is high ”; indicates the organization.
Likewise, the list of countries is expanded, where the variant has been detected after the first cases that occurred in southern Africa this November.
«Depending on these characteristics, there could be future covid-19 peaks, which could have severe consequences (…)» adds the WHO, which as of Friday described the variant as «worrying.»
In the same way, the unknowns about this variant remain numerous, the organization warns however: its contagiousness; and whether this is inherent to the mutations found or to the fact that the variant eludes the immune response. The level of protection of existing anticovid vaccines, and the severity of the disease, ie whether the variant causes more severe symptoms.
