Augusto Silva: el arte detrás del calendario HEMCO 2023 

En medio de la espesa montaña se devela una hermosa casa de tambo y pilotes, pintada de rojo con bordes blancos. A su alrededor, chagüites, palmeras y el verdor de un pueblo del que se dice tiene calles de oro. Es Bonanza, ciudad de la Costa Caribe Norte donde la niebla levanta el velo del día y las aves cierran las tardes.    

Como en un verso de Rubén Darío, a pocas cuadras, una mujer gorda y bonita, pero que no muele maíz, golpea con fuerza una corteza de tuno sobre un tronco de madera en una faena ancestral propia de las mujeres mayangnas quienes aún se dedican a recolectar y trabajar este material.  

Estas imágenes son parte de las 12 escenas ilustradas por el pintor costeño Augusto Silva y que conforman los calendarios y agenda de HEMCO 2023. Silva nació en Puerto Cabezas, pero su infancia y adolescencia transcurrieron en Rosita. Hijo de doña Elba Gómez López, maestra local y apasionada del arte; y de don Adán Silva Mercado, sociólogo, poeta y amante de la pintura.

Silva es un orgullo costeño. Su trabajo es reconocido a nivel nacional e internacional con obras de gran valor. Es licenciado en Artes Plásticas por la Escuela Nacional de Artes Plásticas Rodrigo Peñalba y su pintura destaca por su trazo colorido y geométrico con el que plasma la vida costeña, su gente y paisajes.

“Hacer el calendario de HEMCO fue reto profesional importante para mí, ya que desde hace un tiempo había querido hacer algo con el tema de la minería, me interesaba dar a conocer este motor económico, pero desde la perspectiva artística”, destaca el autor. 

Cada ilustración revela la vida minera en un pueblo que se formó alrededor de una veta. Para él, el conjunto de ilustraciones muestra el aporte de la minería a la economía, la comunidad, aliados y el medio ambiente. “El calendario muestra que la mina no solo es oro, es más que eso, es el desarrollo de una sociedad y sobre todo crecimiento social y cultural de las comunidades que la rodean”, apunta.

Silva es considerado un exponente de la cultura mayangna, ya que también ha rescatado el uso ancestral de la corteza del tuno para sus obras, legado que deja a una nueva generación de artistas. En sus obras destacan los manglares, animales marinos, aves de todo tipo y mucho verdor.

Para él cada paisaje es un retazo de su memoria y una conexión con su origen y cultura, lo cual fue promovido y estimulado por sus padres, ya que desde muy niño mostró habilidad con la pintura y el arte, razón por la que en 1985 lo enviaron a estudiarlo profesionalmente en la Escuela de Bellas Artes de Managua.

“En mi inicio, sentía el deber de dar a conocer nuestra cultura como parte integral de Nicaragua. Comencé con escenas muy tradicionales y luego, junto con una técnica más perfeccionada, fui tomando elementos más complejos e integrándolos en mis composiciones, como el tuno y el guacal”, cuenta Silva.

Es en un recorrido de 12 bellas ilustraciones que el artista pintó el año 2023, guiando con sus trazos y eternas líneas bañadas de colores cada mes, hasta cerrar con una escena de esperanza y un feliz porvenir, porque para Silva “la pintura debe mostrar, siempre, alegría”.

In the middle of the thick mountain, a beautiful tambo and stilt house is revealed, painted red with white edges. Around him, chagüites, palm trees and the greenery of a town that is said to have streets of gold. It is Bonanza, a city on the North Caribbean Coast where the fog lifts the veil of the day and the birds close the afternoons.

As in a verse by Rubén Darío, a few blocks away, a fat and pretty woman, but who does not grind corn, forcefully hits a prickly pear rind on a wooden trunk in an ancestral task typical of Mayangna women who still dedicate themselves to collect and work this material.

These images are part of the 12 scenes illustrated by the coastal painter Augusto Silva and that make up the HEMCO 2023 calendars and agenda. Silva was born in Puerto Cabezas, but spent his childhood and adolescence in Rosita. Son of Doña Elba Gómez López, a local teacher and passionate about art; and Don Adán Silva Mercado, sociologist, poet and lover of painting.

Silva is a coastal pride. His work is recognized nationally and internationally with works of great value. He has a degree in Plastic Arts from the Rodrigo Peñalba National School of Plastic Arts and his painting stands out for its colorful and geometric strokes with which he captures coastal life, its people and landscapes.

«Making the HEMCO calendar was an important professional challenge for me, since for some time I had wanted to do something with the theme of mining, I was interested in making this economic engine known, but from an artistic perspective,» the author highlights.

Each illustration reveals mining life in a town that grew up around a vein. For him, the set of illustrations shows the contribution of mining to the economy, the community, allies and the environment. «The calendar shows that the mine is not only gold, it is more than that, it is the development of a society and, above all, social and cultural growth of the communities that surround it,» he points out.

Silva is considered an exponent of the Mayangna culture, since he has also rescued the ancestral use of the prickly pear bark for his works, a legacy that he leaves behind for a new generation of artists. In his works, mangroves, marine animals, birds of all kinds and lots of greenery stand out.

For him each landscape is a piece of his memory and a connection with his origin and culture, which was promoted and encouraged by his parents, since from a very young age he showed ability with painting and art, which is why in 1985 he They sent him to study it professionally at the School of Fine Arts in Managua.

“In my beginning, I felt the duty to make our culture known as an integral part of Nicaragua. I started with very traditional scenes and then, along with a more perfected technique, I started taking more complex elements and integrating them into my compositions, such as the tuno and the guacal”, says Silva.

It is in a tour of 12 beautiful illustrations that the artist painted in the year 2023, guiding each month with his strokes and eternal lines bathed in colors, until closing with a scene of hope and a happy future, because for Silva “painting must show, Always joy.»
