Un comunicado emitido por líderes indígenas del territorio Mayangna Sauni As señala que el ataque ocurrió la tarde de este lunes en un punto de trabajo de minería artesanal ubicado en el lugar conocido como cerro Kiwakunbaih que significa roca del diablo, el cual era explotado por los comunitarios desde agosto de 2020 de forma artesanal.
Dos testigos que presenciaron el crimen y huyeron con vida explicaron a las autoridades que el lunes a las tres de la tarde observaron 24 hombres que llegaron en dos grupos entraron disparando en las champas donde estaban los mineros.
Los que atacaron andaban con uniforme pinto y ropa de civil, uno de los testigos que se escapó a un cerro logro regresar al lugar y comprobó que habían matado a un total de nueve miskitos originarios de rio coco del sector de Tulahkira y Wiwinack, que trabajaban en las minas de oro con los mayangnas, entre los nueve hay una mujer y dos indígenas mayangnas muertos.
